ultimate.earth, the tourism and conservation operator formerly known as Ultimate Safaris, has announced an N$85 million investment to build The Bohlen, a new five-star boutique hotel in the coastal town of Swakopmund. Designed to attract high-end travelers, the project aims to blend luxury tourism with local economic growth and heritage preservation.

Construction and Employment Impact

Construction on The Bohlen began on 12 October, with an expected completion and opening in the fourth quarter of 2027. The build phase is projected to create nearly 200 temporary construction jobs over a one-year period, followed by approximately 50 permanent positions once the hotel begins operations.

The project has cleared several regulatory hurdles, including approval from the Namibia Competition Commission for the acquisition, as well as endorsements from the Swakopmund Aesthetics Committee, the National Heritage Council, and the Swakopmund Municipality for its building plans. These approvals signal strong local support for the redevelopment of a historically significant site.

Heritage Meets Modern Design

The hotel will be housed in a heritage-protected building originally called Villa Wille, constructed in 1909 as the private residence of Hermann Wille, an architect and building engineer who played a role in shaping early Swakopmund. The building later served as a private home, medical consulting rooms, and eventually the Hotel Eberwein.

To honor the structure’s legacy, ultimate.earth has partnered with local architects Mackintosh Lautenback and construction firm Fritze & Quelle. Their expertise in Swakopmund’s architectural heritage will guide the restoration, ensuring the new design respects the past while introducing contemporary comforts. The hotel’s name is inspired by the Eduard Bohlen, a passenger and cargo ship that ran aground on Namibia’s Skeleton Coast in September 1909, whose wreck remains a notable maritime landmark.

Amenities and Local Integration

The Bohlen will offer 14 suites, including eight Classic Suites, four Heritage Suites with a Family Suite, and two Attic Penthouse Suites. Additional facilities include a spa, gym, and a restaurant and brasserie serving all daily meals. The restaurant, open to both guests and the public, is intended to become a standalone dining destination in Swakopmund.

Located in central Swakopmund, the hotel places guests within walking distance of the town’s attractions, shops, galleries, cafés, and coastline. Its focus on discerning travelers is meant to draw new visitors while encouraging engagement with existing local businesses and experiences.

Leadership Vision

Tristan Cowley, Managing Director of ultimate.earth, emphasized that the company does not intend to replicate existing offerings in Swakopmund. “We want to contribute something distinctive, attract new visitors and complement the tourism experiences that make this town so special,” Cowley said.
