Swansea Launches Poppy Appeal, Honors Veterans with Events

Swansea has launched its annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, kicking off a series of Remembrance events leading up to Remembrance Sunday. The appeal, which supports serving and former armed forces members and their families, began with a ceremony at Swansea Market. This year’s launch event, held on Friday, brought together veterans, civic leaders, Royal British Legion representatives, and members of the public to mark the start of the city’s remembrance activities.
Lord Mayor Cllr Penny Matthews emphasized the importance of remembrance, urging residents to support the appeal and participate in local events. She described it as a privilege to join veterans and community supporters, highlighting the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of service personnel. Council Leader Rob Stewart highlighted the sacrifices made by local service members, calling for gratitude and respect, and noting that many have given their lives for the freedoms enjoyed today.
Poppies will be available at various locations, including Swansea Market, Y Storfa, the Guildhall, and several libraries. The council’s Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Wendy Lewis, noted Swansea’s proud military heritage and encouraged residents to thank those who have served.
Upcoming events include a Cross of Peace ceremony on October 23 at Dan Y Graig Cemetery, organized by the Royal British Legion at 10.30am, the Garden of Remembrance opening on November 1 on the green outside Morgan’s Hotel at 10.45am, and a Festival of Remembrance on November 7 at Brangwyn Hall at 6pm, which is a free event. On Remembrance Sunday, November 8, events organized by the Royal British Legion will culminate in a commemoration service at the Cenotaph at 10:30 a.m.
The council and civic leaders will attend local ceremonies, with the Lord Lieutenant representing the city at the Swansea Cenotaph. The Leader and other councillors will also participate in various remembrance activities across the city, showing the community’s commitment to honoring those who have served.
