The MHRA reported that nearly 20 million doses of illegally traded medications were confiscated in 2025.

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) seized more than 12,000 counterfeit weight-loss pens during a raid on an industrial unit in Birmingham on 14 October. The operation, carried out with West Midlands Police, resulted in the confiscation of products estimated to be worth £2 million. Authorities also found packaging for roughly 30,000 additional items.

The scale of the illegal market

The MHRA reported that nearly 20 million doses of illegally traded medications were confiscated in 2025. During the same period, authorities shut down over 1,500 websites and social media accounts involved in the sale of illegal drugs. This enforcement activity highlights a persistent criminal enterprise targeting consumers seeking pharmaceuticals.

Boo Dhaliwal, a pharmacist and the CEO of online pharmacy Pharmacy Planet, argues that criminals exploit the growing demand for weight-loss treatments. Patients seeking cheaper or more convenient options may not realize they are purchasing products that lack any genuine active component or contain harmful contaminants. Unlike products from verified providers, these counterfeit items often have incorrect dosages or undisclosed ingredients.

Online sales of prescription drugs have expanded rapidly. Dhaliwal notes that a well-designed website does not guarantee the legitimacy of the products offered. Criminals can create convincing digital storefronts with attractive branding and competitive pricing to deceive potential buyers. The focus on convenience and discretion, while often beneficial, can obscure the potential dangers of unregulated purchasing.

Because these drugs are often sold without a proper prescription, patients bypass the professional safeguards that standard pharmacies provide. Dhaliwal, who has over two decades of experience in pharmacy, explains that supplying medication involves professional responsibilities. This includes assessing whether a treatment is appropriate and checking for safety risks or interactions.

Guidelines for safe online purchasing

Pharmacists recommend verifying the pharmacy through the General Pharmaceutical Council’s official online register. Patients should look for a genuine clinical assessment and clear business details. Extremely low prices or guaranteed results often signal a scam. Avoid unregulated social media sellers who promote medicines through private messages.
