Pupils from Willows High and Moorland Primary School took part in workshops.

A new mural was recently finished at Moorland Park in Cardiff, honoring the voices and experiences of local young people. The artwork, crafted by Canton-based artist Peaceful Progress, forms part of a broader investment initiative tied to the Willows High development.

Pupils from Willows High and Moorland Primary School played a central role in shaping the mural, taking part in workshops that explored the history of Moorland Park and its importance to the community. These workshops were run with Cardiff Curriculum, Cardiff University, Glamorgan Archives, Cardiff Council’s Active Travel Team, and South Wales Police.

The mural was delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction, the contractor that built the new school, as part of Community Wellbeing Benefits linked to the scheme. It is one of several improvements to the park, including upgraded entrances, improved pathways, new landscaping, and additional benches.

Louise, founder of Keep Splott Tidy, worked closely with project partners to secure necessary permissions and approvals, contributing ideas throughout the development of the scheme. They designed the park improvements to encourage greater use of the park, support active travel for learners, and create a safer environment for local people.

Cllr Sarah Merry, Cardiff Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, stated that the new Willows High is about more than delivering a new school building. The Community Wellbeing Benefits will have a positive impact on the surrounding community, creating a safer, greener, and more welcoming space for residents and learners.

Georgie Davies, Social Value Advisor from Morgan Sindall, said that projects like this provide an opportunity to create a lasting positive impact within the communities where they work. By supporting local young people to influence the spaces around them, Morgan Sindall is helping to encourage community pride and leave a meaningful social value legacy.

The investment reflects a commitment to ensuring the benefits of the new school extend beyond the school gates, strengthening connections between the school and the area it serves. The new Willows High is set to open its new campus in November, and the park improvements will help create a lasting legacy for the community.

Councillor Merry and Georgie Davies both emphasize the importance of community involvement in projects like this.
